Ly Tong, the Vietnamese "freedom fighter" who was convicted last week of assaulting a singer by spraying her with tear gas, has begun a hunger strike, according to a lawyer who has consulted with Tong.
Attorney Minh "Steven" Dovan, who did not represent Tong in the assault case, said he visited him for two hours on Friday night at Santa Clara County's main jail. Dovan said Tong told him he stopped eating or drinking as of 8 a.m. Friday and plans to go without food or water indefinitely.
"He felt that the verdict was unfair. He felt that he was not guilty," Dovan said. "This is not meant to be a pun, but he's deadly serious."
A jury found Tong guilty Thursday of two misdemeanors and two felonies for a 2010 incident in which Tong sprayed tear gas -- either pepper spray or a mixture of fish sauce and perfume -- at singer Dam Vinh Hung.
Tong, a former South Vietnamese pilot who has a history of anti-communist stunts, was dressed in women's clothes and a wig when he assaulted the singer.
Tong also conducted a month-long hunger strike in front of San Jose City Hall in 2008 to convince city leaders to get a strip of Vietnamese shops on Story Road designated as Little Saigon.
A spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office did not immediately return calls seeking information about Tong's hunger strike.
