Nước Mỹ đang có 29 triệu người nằm trong nhóm 1% giàu nhất lại kiểm soát đa số sự giàu có trong xă hội mà phong trào Chiếm phố Wall lên án, theo phân tích của một chuyên gia World Bank.
Khẩu hiệu của phong trào Chiếm phố Wall chỉ là một câu đơn giản: “Chúng tôi là 99%”, mô tả sự gia tăng bất b́nh đẳng ở Mỹ: 1% dân số kiểm soát hơn 40% tài sản và nhận hơn 20% lợi nhuận. 99% c̣n lại là người nghèo. Hay nói cách khác, 1% dân số nắm giữ hầu hết sự giàu có so với 99% c̣n lại. Phong trào này nhanh chóng lan rộng tại nhiều nơi trên thế giới.
Tuy nhiên, một cuốn sách mới tung ra cuối năm ngoái của kinh tế trưởng Branko Milanovich (ngân hàng Thế giới – World Bank) lại nh́n nhận góc độ khác: nước Mỹ đang chiếm đến gần một nửa của số 1% người giàu nói trên, tính trên b́nh diện toàn cầu! Thậm chí ông Milanovich c̣n cho rằng những người tham gia tuần hành chiếm phố Wall là đang... chống lại ḿnh, v́ rất có thể họ thuộc một nửa của số 1% nói trên (khoảng 60 triệu người trên thế giới).
Trong cuốn sách "The Haves and the Have Nots" (tạm dịch: Kẻ có người không), ông Milanovich dựa trên các tính toán tiêu chuẩn về phân loại giàu nghèo của ngân hàng Thế giới (số liệu 2005), đă tính rằng nước Mỹ có đến 29 triệu người có thu nhập hàng năm sau khi trừ thuế là 34.000USD/người, được xếp vào hàng ngũ nhóm 1%, và chiếm 48% của nhóm 1% này trên thế giới. Nói cách khác, Mỹ là nước chiếm gần một nửa số người giàu có nhất trên trái đất. Mỗi người Mỹ trong nhóm 1% này trung b́nh làm ra từ 506.000USD trở lên mỗi năm.
Số 1% người giàu có nhất thế giới c̣n lại được phân bổ chủ yếu ở châu Âu với Đức: 4 triệu người; Anh, Pháp, Ư mỗi nước 3 triệu; Canada, Hàn Quốc, Nhật, Brazil mỗi nước khoảng 2 triệu; Thuỵ Sĩ, Tây Ban Nha, Úc, Hà Lan, Chile, Singapore và lănh thổ Đài Loan: mỗi nơi 1 triệu người. C̣n ở châu Phi, Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ, Đông Âu, Nga là hầu như không có!

Sự giàu có này cũng rất chênh lệch. Theo danh sách giàu có 2011 của tạp chí Forbes, Mỹ dẫn đầu thế giới với 412 tỉ phú (dân số 307 triệu), trong khi Venezuela chỉ có 2 tỉ phú với dân số 28 triệu. Tính trung b́nh cứ 743.000 người Mỹ th́ có 1 tỉ phú, trong khi 14 triệu dân Venezuela mới có 1 tỉ phú. Và theo cuốn sách của ông Milanovich th́ số người giàu có ở Mỹ (29 triệu) c̣n đông hơn dân số cả nước Venezuela!
Trung Quốc có 115 tỉ phú, xem ra cũng ấn tượng nhưng nếu so với dân số 1,3 tỉ người th́ cứ 11,3 triệu dân mới có 1 tỉ phú.
Theo tính toán, tầng lớp gọi là trung lưu toàn cầu chỉ có thu nhập trung b́nh 1.225USD/năm sau thuế, so ra c̣n thua xa nhóm 1% này. Thậm chí 5% dân số được xem là nghèo khổ nhất nước Mỹ c̣n giàu hơn cả 2/3 dân số thế giới. Do vậy tầng lớp trung lưu ở các nước đang phát triển tại châu Phi, Trung Quốc, ... không so sánh được với tầng lớp trung lưu tại các nước phát triển, khi họ không có xe hơi, kế hoạch tài chính hưu trí, nhà riêng, con cái học đại học... V́ vậy mà danh sách 1% giàu có nhất không có tên các nước này...

It only takes $34,000 per person to be amid the richest 1% of people in the world.
The United States holds a disproportionate amount of the world's rich people.
It only takes $34,000 a year, after taxes, to be among the richest 1% in the world. That's for each person living under the same roof, including children. (So a family of four, for example, needs to make $136,000.)
So where do these lucky rich people live? As of 2005 -- the most recent data available -- about half of them, or 29 million lived in the United States, according to calculations by World Bank economist Branko Milanovic in his book The Haves and the Have-Nots.
Another four million live in Germany. The rest are mainly scattered throughout Europe, Latin America and a few Asian countries. Statistically speaking, none live in Africa, China or India despite those being some of the most populous areas of the world.
The numbers put into perspective the idea of a rapidly growing global middle class.
Sure, China and India are seeing their economies grow quickly, and along with that growth, large portions of their populations are also becoming richer. But remember, the emerging world is starting from a very low base to begin with, so its middle class is just that -- still emerging, says Milanovic.
"It doesn't seem right to define as middle class, people who would be on food stamps in the United States," Milanovic said.
The true global middle class, falls far short of owning a home, having a car in a driveway, saving for retirement and sending their kids to college. In fact, people at the world's true middle -- as defined by median income -- live on just $1,225 a year. (And, yes, Milanovic's numbers are adjusted to account for different costs of living across the globe.)
In the grand scheme of things, even the poorest 5% of Americans are better off financially than two thirds of the entire world.

Nearly half of the world's richest one per cent of people live in the U.S., according to a top economist.
But the threshold required to make it in to that elite group is lower than you might think - just $34,000 per person.
While the Occupy Wall Street movement has focussed on the top one per cent of earners in the U.S., Branko Milanovic, a World Bank economist, has suggested that anti-inequality protesters should be more concerned with wealth disparity across the globe.
And although the rise of the middle class in the Third World has been loudly celebrated, Mr Milanovic points out that a middle-class salary in emerging economies would be considered dire poverty in the West.
Of the 60million or so people who made up the world's richest percentile at the time of the most recent data, around 29million live in the U.S.
The top one per cent comprises anyone with an income over $34,000 after tax, meaning a family of four must earn $136,000 to make it in the category, according to CNN.
One quarter of the group's members live in Europe, with 4million in Germany and 3million in each of the UK, France and Italy. Other countries with large numbers of 'the 1%' include Canada, Japan and Brazil.
The proportion of the world's wealthiest people living in China, India, Russia and Africa is statistically insignificant, according to Mr Milanovic.
And the global median income is just $1,225 a year, meaning that the world's emerging middle classes are very far from reaching a level of wealth which would make them well-off by western standards.
Mr Milanovic said: 'It doesn't seem right to define as middle class people who would be on food stamps in the United States.'
His findings, first outlined in his book The Haves and the Have-Nots, published last year, serve as a reminder that despite the West's troubles it remains very much wealthier than the developing world.
The economic decline of the U.S., Europe and Japan has been widely predicted, but for the time being nearly all the world's rich are to be found in the West.
