Giữa Đức Kitô và Ishtar
Ở giữa những hoa viên và các ngọn đồi nối liền thành phố Beirut với Li-băng, có một ngôi đền nhỏ, rất cổ, được đục trong đá trắng, vây quanh là các hàng dương liễu, ô liu và hạnh nhân. Dù ngôi đền ấy chỉ nằm cách xa lộ chính nửa dặm nhưng vào lúc xảy ra câu chuyện này, rất ít người quan tâm tới các di tích và tàn tích cổ đại chịu bỏ công thăm viếng nó. Nó là một trong nhiều địa điểm đáng chú ư, kín đáo và bị quên lăng tại Li-băng. V́ sự khuất lấp ấy, ngôi đền thành nơi nương náu của những kẻ thờ phượng và đền thờ cho những người t́nh cô đơn.
Khi vào trong ngôi đền, ta sẽ thấy trên vách mé đông có một bức phù điêu cổ Phoenicia tạc trong đá, mô tả Ishtar, nữ thần của t́nh yêu và cái đẹp, ngồi trên ngai của nàng, vây quanh là bảy trinh nữ khỏa thân đứng theo các tư thế khác nhau. Trinh nữ thứ nhất cầm đuốc; cô thứ hai cây đàn; cô thứ ba lư hương trầm; cô thứ tư choé rượu; cô thứ năm cành hoa hồng; cô thứ sáu ṿng nguyệt quế; và cô thứ bảy cây cung và mũi tên. Cả bảy cô đều đưa mắt kính ngưỡng nh́n lên Ishtar.
Trên bức tường thứ hai có một bức phù điêu khác, thời điểm sau bức thứ nhất, diễn đạt theo cách tượng trưng Đức Kitô bị đóng đinh trên giá chữ thập. Bên cạnh ngài đứng mẹ của ngài đầy sầu bi, cùng Mary Magdalena và hai phụ nữ đang khóc. Bức khắc nổi kiểu Bizantine này cho thấy nó được chạm vào thế kỷ 17 hoặc 16.
Trên bức tường mé đông có hai ngách h́nh ṿng cung theo đó ánh mặt trời chiếu vào ngôi đền, hắt lên các bức phù điêu ấy và làm chúng như thể được tô bằng kim nhủ. Ở chính giữa ngôi đền có một tảng cẩm thạch vuông mỗi mé có một bức điêu khắc cổ. Một vài bức khó nhận ra v́ trên mặt có những cục máu hóa thạch chứng tỏ người cổ đại đă tế lễ cùng đổ trầm hương, rượu và dầu lên trên bệ đá này.
Không c̣n ǵ khác trong ngôi đền ngoài sự tịch lặng thẳm sâu, vén lộ cho người đang sống những bí mật của các thần nữ, và qua vô ngôn, nói tới những thời đại đă qua cùng cuộc tiến hóa của các tôn giáo. Cảnh tượng ấy mang thi sĩ tới một thế giới xa rất xa thế giới y đang nương náu và khiến các triết gia tin rằng con người bẩm sinh mang tính tôn giáo; loài người cảm thấy có nhu cầu đáp ứng cái họ không thể trông thấy và vẽ thành biểu tượng ư nghĩa của những cái thố lộ các bi mật ẩn giấu và các khát vọng của họ trong cuộc sống và cái chết.
Trong ngôi đền không tên đó, tôi gặp gỡ Selma mỗi tháng một lần và ở bên nàng trong nhiều giờ, ngắm các bức tranh lạ thường ấy, ngẫm nghĩ về Đức Kitô chịu đóng đinh và trầm tưởng tới những thanh niên Phoenicia cùng những phụ nữ đă sống, đă yêu và thờ phượng cái đẹp trong con người của Ishtar bằng cách đốt trầm hương trước tượng của nàng, rưới nước hoa lên bệ thờ nàng, những kẻ không lưu lại ǵ để nói tới ngoài một cái tên được nhắc lại bởi cuộc diễu hành của thời gian trước bộ mặt của Vĩnh cửu.
Thật khó có thể ghi thành hồi kư những giờ tôi gặp gỡ Selma – những giờ tuyệt trần, chan chứa đau đớn và ngập tràn hạnh phúc, khổ năo, hi vọng và khốn khổ.
Chúng tôi thầm lén gặp nhau trong ngôi đền cổ ấy, ôn lại những ngày cũ, thảo luận về hiện tại của ḿnh, sợ hăi tương lai và dần dần làm lộ rơ các bí mật ẩn giấu trong những chốn sâu thẳm của linh hồn chúng tôi, ra sức ủi an nhau bằng những hi vọng tưởng tượng và những giấc mộng tiếc nuối.
Thỉnh thoảng ḷng chúng tôi lắng đọng, lau khô nước mắt và bắt đầu mỉm cười, lăng quên mọi sự, chỉ c̣n biết đến T́nh yêu. Chúng tôi ấp ủ nhau cho tới khi trái tim tan chảy. Kế đó Selma in dấu một nụ hôn thuần khiết lên trán tôi khiến tâm hồn tôi chan chứa ngất ngây. Tôi đáp trả chiếc hôn ấy lúc nàng nghiêng cổ màu ngà xuống với đôi má ửng hồng và mịn màng trông như tia nắng mai đầu tiên trên trán các ngọn đồi. Chúng tôi lặng im nh́n chân trời xa xa nơi các đám mây nhuộm tia nắng màu da cam thành ráng chiều mặt trời lặn.
Những chuyện văn của chúng tôi không giới hạn trong t́nh yêu. Thông trường chúng tôi lan man trên các vấn đề đang xảy ra và trao đổi ư kiến. Xuôi theo ḍng chuyện tṛ, Selma nói tới địa vị của phụ nữ trong xă hội, vết hằn các thời đại đă qua để lại trên cá tính của người nữ, mối quan hệ giữa chồng và vợ, các bệnh hoạn tinh thần và sự băng hoại đe dọa cuộc sống hôn nhân. Tôi nhớ lời nàng từng nói:
“Các nhà thơ và nhà văn cố t́m cách thấu hiểu thực tại của người đàn bà nhưng cho tới nay, họ vẫn không hiểu những bí mật ẩu giấu trong tâm hồn nàng v́ họ nh́n đàn bà từ đằng sau tấm mạng tính dục và chỉ thấy vẻ bên ngoài của nàng. Họ nh́n người nữ qua chiếc kính oán hờn phóng đại và chẳng t́m thấy ǵ ngoài yếu ớt và vâng phục.”
Vào một dịp khác, Selma đưa tay lên chỉ tới các bức phù điêu trên vách ngôi đền và nói:
“Trong ḷng của đá này có hai biểu tượng mô tả cái cốt tủy trong khát vọng của phụ nữ và vén lộ những bí mật ẩn giấu của linh hồn đàn bà, đó là chuyển động giữa t́nh yêu và khổ năo, giữa thương cảm và hi sinh, giữa Ishtar đang ngồi trên ngai và Đức mẹ Maria đang đứng bên cây thánh giá. Người nam mua vinh quang và danh tiếng nhưng người nữ trả giá.”
Không ai biết những cuộc gặp mặt kín đáo của chúng tôi ngoài Thượng đế và lũ chim lượn ṿng trên ngôi đền. Selma thường dùng cổ xe ngựa của nàng đến một chỗ có tên là Công viên Pasha. Từ chỗ đó, nàng đi bộ tới ngôi đền và t́m thấy tôi đang khắc khoải ngóng từng giây.
Chúng tôi không sợ con mắt quan sát của người đời, cũng không sợ lương tâm của cả hai chúng tôi. Tinh thần được thanh tẩy bằng lửa và rửa sạch bằng nước mắt th́ cao hơn cái người đời gọi là hổ thẹn hay ô nhục. Nó được giải phóng khỏi các lề luật nô lệ và những phong tục lỗi thời ngược với t́nh cảm của tâm hồn con người. Tinh thần ấy có thể kiêu hănh đứng không chút xấu hổ trước ngai của Thượng đế.
Xă hội loài người trong suốt bảy mươi thế kỷ đă đầu hàng những luật lệ băng hoại tới độ ngày nay nó không thể hiểu luật lệ tối thượng và vĩnh cửu. Con mắt loài người đă ngày càng quen thuộc với ánh sáng le lói của ngọn nến và không thể nh́n ánh sáng của mặt trời. Bệnh tật tinh thần đă trở nên thành phần của người đời khiến họ nh́n nó không phải là bệnh tật mà như một tặng phẩm tự nhiên được Thượng đế ban cho A-đam. Nếu thấy có ai đó thoát khỏi các mầm mống của bệnh tật ấy, họ sẽ nghĩ về y với sự hỗ thẹn và ô nhục.
Những kẻ nào nghĩ xấu về Selma Karamy v́ nàng rời nhà chồng đến gặp tôi trong ngôi đền là kẻ bệnh hoạn và là một loại tâm trí bạc nhược, một kẻ nh́n người lành mạnh và tráng kiện như một tên nổi loạn. Những kẻ ấy giống như côn trùng ḅ trong bóng tối v́ sợ người qua đường dẫm lên ḿnh.
Tù nhân bị áp bức nào có thể phá vỡ ngục tù của ḿnh mà không làm, đều là kẻ hèn nhát. Selma, một tù nhân vô tội và bị áp bức, không có khả năng giải thoát ḿnh khỏi cảnh nô lệ. Nàng có đáng trách v́ đă qua cửa sổ nhà tù, nh́n cánh đồng xanh và bầu trời bao la? Người đời có xem Selma là không chung thủy với chồng v́ nàng từø nhà ḿnh tới đây để ngồi bên tôi giữa Đức Kitô và nữ thần Ishtar?
Cứ để người đời nói điều họ thích nói, Selma đă vượt qua những đầm lầy nhận ch́m các tinh thần khác và đă đặt chân lên đất liền trong một thế giới không bị tiếng hú của lang sói và tiếng ŕ rào của rắn với tới. Người đời có thể nói điều họ muốn nói về tôi v́ một tinh thần từng thấy bóng ma của sự chết th́ không thể bị bộ mặt của kẻ cắp hăm dọa. Người lính nào từng thấy thanh gươm lấp lánh trên đầu và suối máu dưới chân th́ không thèm đếm xỉa những viên đá trẻ con trên đường phố ném tới.

Hi sinh
Một ngày vào hạ tuần tháng sáu khi dân chúng rời thành thị lên núi tránh cái nóng mùa hạ, tôi như thường lệ tới ngôi đền để gặp mặt Selma, mang theo bên ḿnh cuốn sách nhỏ gồm các bài thơ xứ Andalusia.
Tới ngôi đền, trong khi ngồi đó trông ngóng Selma, lâu lâu tôi lại nh́n vào vài trang sách, ngâm những câu thơ làm tâm hồn ḿnh chứa chan ngây ngất và mang tới cho linh hồn ḿnh những hồi ức về các vua, thi sĩ, hiệp sĩ đă chào từ biệt để đi Granada với lệ trong mắt, khổ năo trong ḷng và để lại đằng sau các dinh thự, cơ quan cùng niềm hy vọng.
Một giờ sau, tôi thấy Selma đang đi giữa các hoa viên, tới gần ngôi đền, lệch người dưới chiếc dù che nắng như thể đang mang hết thảy những âu lo của thế giới trên vai. Khi nàng bước vào ngôi đền và ngồi bên tôi, tôi để ư có cái ǵ đó thay đổi trong mắt nàng, và tôi khắc khoải muốn ḍ hỏi cho ra.
Cảm nhận được những ǵ đang diễn ra trong tâm trí tôi, Selma đặt bàn tay lên đầu tôi và nói:
“Nào, người thương yêu của em, hăy xích lại gần em để em làm anh nguôi cơn khát v́ sắp đến giờ chúng ta chia tay nhau.”
Tôi thảng thốt hỏi nàng:
“Có phải chồng em đă biết chuyện chúng ta gặp gỡ nhau ở đây?”
Nàng điềm tĩnh trả lời:
“Chồng em chẳng bao giờ quan tâm tới em. Ông ấy cũng không biết em sử dụng thời gian như thế nào v́ ông suốt ngày bận rộn với các cô gái khốn khổ bị cảnh nghèo túng xô đẩy vào các ngôi nhà nổi tiếng bệnh hoạn, phải bán thân xác để có loại bánh ḿ bột nhào với máu và nước mắt.”
Tôi thắc mắc tiếp:
“Cái ǵ ngăn không cho em tới ngôi đền này và cẩn trọng ngồi bên anh trước Thượng đế. Có phải linh hồn em đang đ̣i hỏi chúng ta phải chia tay nhau?”
Nàng trả lời, long lanh nước mắt:
“Không, người thương yêu của em, tinh thần của em không đ̣i hỏi phải chia ĺa nhau v́ anh là thành phần của em. Đôi mắt em không bao giờ thấm mệt khi nh́n anh v́ anh là ánh sáng của chúng. Nhưng nếu số phận ra lệnh cho em phải đi trên đường gập ghềnh của một cuộc đời chất nặng xiềng xích th́ liệu em có bằng ḷng không nếu số phận của anh cũng sẽ giống như của em?”
Kế đó, nàng nói thêm:
“Em không thể nói tất cả v́ lưỡi em thắt lại với đau đớn và không nói được, môi em hằn kín v́ khốn khổ và không chuyển động được. Tất cả những ǵ em có thể nói với anh là em đang sợ anh có thể bị rơi vào chiếc bẫy như em đang mắc.”
Nghe vậy, tôi hỏi:
“Selma ạ, em có ư nói ǵ vậy, và ai là kẻ đang làm em sợ?”
Nàng đưa hai tay lên che mặt và đáp:
“Giám mục đă phát hiện rằng mỗi tháng một lần em ra khỏi nấm mồ mà ông ấy chôn em trong đó.”
Tôi thắc mắc:
“Có phải Giám mục đă biết được việc chúng ta gặp nhau ở đây?”
Nàng trả lời:
“Nếu ông ấy đă biết, anh sẽ không thấy em ở đây và đang ngồi bên anh. Nhưng ông ấy có ḷng nghi ngờ. Ông thông báo cho hết thảy người làm của ông phải canh chừng em thật kỹ. Em có cảm giác trong ngôi nhà em sống và trên con đường em đi đều có các cặp mắt theo dơi em, những ngón tay chỉ thẳng vào em và những đôi tai nghe ngóng tiếng th́ thầm của ư nghĩ em.”
Selma im lặng một lúc rồi nàng nói thêm, hai má đẫm nước mắt:
“Em không sợ Giám mục v́ đă ướt sủng th́ không c̣n e ngại bị ch́m đắm, Nhưng em sợ anh có thể rơi vào chiếc bẫy và trở thành con mồi của ông. Anh c̣n trẻ và tự do như ánh nắng. Em không sợ cái số phận đă bắn tất cả mũi tên của nó vào lồng ngực em nhưng em sợ con rắn có thể cắn bàn chân anh, cản trở không cho anh leo lên đỉnh núi nơi tương lai đang chờ anh với hân hoan và vinh quang của nó.”
Tôi nói:
“Kẻ chưa bị con rắn của ánh sáng cắn và con sói của bóng tối táp, sẽ luôn luôn bị lừa dối suốt ngày suốt đêm. Nhưng hăy lắng nghe, Selma, hăy lắng nghe thật kỹ, có phải chia tay là phương cách duy nhất để tránh những độc dữ và đê tiện của người đời? Có phải con đường của t́nh yêu và tự do bị đóng lại và không lưu lại ǵ ngoài sự đầu hàng ư muốn của những kẻ nô lệ sự chết?”
Nàng đáp:
“Không có ǵ để lại ngoài sự chia xa và nói lời chào từ giă nhau.”
Với tinh thần nổi loạn, tôi cầm tay Selma và nói bằng giọng khích động:
“Suốt một thời gian dài, chúng ta đă đầu hàng ư muốn của người đời. Kể từ lúc chúng ta gặp nhau cho tới giờ này, chúng ta bị người mù hướng dẫn và cùng với họ, chúng ta bái lạy trước các ngẫu tượng của họ. Kể từ lúc chúng ta gặp nhau, chúng ta đă ở trong bàn tay của Giám mục như hai trái banh bị ông liệng qua ném lại tùy thích. Có phải chúng ta sắp sửa đầu hàng ư muốn của ông cho tới khi cái chết mang chúng ta đi măi măi?
“Có phải Thượng đế đă hà hơi sự sống cho chúng ta để rồi đặt nó dưới bàn chân của sự chết? Có phải ngài đă ban cho chúng ta sự tự do để chúng ta biến nó thành một h́nh bóng của nô lệ? Kẻ dập tắt ngọn lửa tinh thần ḿnh bằng chính bàn tay của ḿnh, tức là tên vô đạo trong mắt của Trời v́ Trời bày ra lửa để bùng cháy trong tinh thần của chúng ta. Kẻ không nổi loạn chống áp bức tức là đang đối xử bất công với chính ḿnh.
“Anh yêu em, Selma, và em cũng yêu anh. T́nh yêu là kho tàng quí báu, là tặng phẩm của Thượng đế ban cho các tinh thần nhạy cảm và vĩ đại. Chúng ta có sẽ vứt bỏ kho tàng ấy, để cho lũ lợn húc nó tán loạn và dẫm đạp lên nó? Thế giới này tràn đầy kỳ diệu và vẻ đẹp. Tại sao chúng ta lại sống trong đường hầm chật hẹp mà Giám mục và những kẻ tiếp tay ông đă đào sẵn cho chúng ta? Cuộc đời chan chứa hạnh phúc và tự do, tại sao chúng ta không cởi bỏ chiếc ách nặng nề khỏi hai vai, bẻ găy xiềng xích đang trói hai chân, để bước đi tự do, tới ḥa b́nh?
“Hăy đứng lên và chúng ta hăy rời ngôi đền nhỏ bé này để tới ngôi đền rộng lớn của Thượng đế. Chúng ta hăy rời xứ sở này với tất cả t́nh trạng nô lệ và mê muội của nó để đi tới một xứ sở khác, xa rất xa, mà bàn tay của lũ trộm cắp không với tới. Chúng ta hăy ra bờ biển, dưới sự che chở của bóng đêm, lên con tàu sẽ mang chúng ta băng ngang các đại dương để tới nơi có thể t́m thấy một cuộc sống mới tràn đầy hạnh phúc và am hiểu.
“Selma ơi, đừng ngần ngại, v́ những phút này đối với chúng ta quí báu hơn vương miện các đức vua và tuyệt vời hơn ngai các thiên thần. Chúng ta hăy bước theo cột ánh sáng dẫn ḿnh đi từ sa mạc khô cằn tới các đồng cỏ xanh mọc đầy hoa và trầm hương.”
Selma lắc đầu. Nàng nh́n đăm đăm cái ǵ đó vô h́nh bên trên ṿm điện, với nụ cười đau đớn xuất hiện trên môi. Kế đó, nàng nói:
“Không, không, người thương yêu của em. Trời đă đặt vào bàn tay em chiếc ly đầy dấm và mật đắng. Em buộc ḷng phải uống cạn để biết trọn vẹn mùi vị cay đắng ấy cho tới khi đáy ly chỉ đọng lại vài giọt cho em kiên nhẫn uống tiếp. Em không xứng đáng sống một cuộc đời mới chan chứa t́nh yêu và b́nh an. Em không đủ mạnh để có hoan lạc và ngọt ngào của cuộc sống v́ con chim găy cánh không thể bay giữa bầu trời bao la. Những con mắt đă quen với ánh sáng leo lét của ngọn nến không đủ mạnh để nh́n thẳng mặt trời.
“Anh đừng nói với em về hạnh phúc; chỉ việc nhớ tới nó cũng đủ làm em đau khổ. Anh đừng đề cập tới b́nh an với em; chiếc bóng của nó làm em run sợ. Nhưng đây này, anh hăy nh́n em, em sẽ cho anh thấy ngọn đuốc thiêng trời đă thắp sáng trong tro tàn của tâm hồn em. Anh biết rằng em thương yêu anh chẳng kém t́nh thương của người mẹ đối với đứa con độc nhất của ḿnh, và T́nh yêu ấy dạy em bảo vệ anh cho dẫu có phải rời xa anh.
“Chính T́nh yêu được thanh tẩy bằng lửa đă ngăn không cho em đi theo anh tới miền đất xa xôi nhất. T́nh yêu ấy giết chết mọi khát vọng của em để anh có thể sống tự do và đức hạnh. T́nh yêu hữu hạn đ̣i hỏi sở hữu người ḿnh yêu nhưng t́nh yêu vô biên chỉ đ̣i hỏi chính nó thôi. T́nh yêu, xuất hiện giữa hồn nhiên mộc mạc và sự thức dậy của tuổi trẻ, tự làm nó toại nguyện bằng hành động sở hữu và ôm ấp, c̣n t́nh yêu ra đời giữa ṿm trời lồng lộng và giáng hạ theo những bí ẩn của đêm th́ không toại nguyện với bất cứ cái ǵ, ngoài Vĩnh cửu và bất tử; nó chỉ đứng với ḷng đầy cung kính trước thần linh chứ không trước bất cứ cái nào khác.
“Khi em biết rằng Giám mục muốn ngăn không cho em rời ngôi nhà của cháu ông và tước mất niềm hoan lạc duy nhất của em, em đứng trước cửa sổ pḥng ḿnh, nh́n ra biển, nghĩ tới những xứ sở bao la bên kia biển, tới sự tự do chân chính và độc lập mà em có thể t́m thấy ở đó. Em cảm thấy ḿnh đang sống gần anh, được bao phủ bởi chiếc bóng của tinh thần anh, được ch́m đắm trong đại dương chan chứa t́nh thương của anh.
“Nhưng hết thảy những ư nghĩ ấy – vốn soi sáng trái tim phụ nữ khiến nàng nổi loạn chống lại phong tục cổ hủ để sống trong chiếc bóng của tự do và công lư – đă làm cho em tin rằng em yếu đuối và t́nh yêu hữu hạn mỏng manh của chúng ta không có khả năng đứng vững trước vầng mặt trời. Lúc đó em khóc như một đức vua bị cướp mất vương quốc và lấy sạch các kho tàng, nhưng rồi em thấy khuôn mặt anh trong những ḍng nước mắt ấy, và mắt anh đăm đăm nh́n em làm em nhớ lại những lời anh có lần nói với em rằng:
“Nào, Selma, tỉnh lại. Chúng ta hăy như những ngọn tháp vững vàng trước băo tố. Chúng ta hăy đứng như hai chiến binh dũng cảm trước kẻ thù, đối mặt với vũ khí của chúng. Nếu bị giết, chúng ta sẽ chết như người tuẩn tiết; nếu chiến thắng, chúng ta sẽ sống như kẻ anh hùng. Đương đầu với chướng ngại và sống với gian khổ th́ cao nhă hơn im lặng rút lui.
“Người thương yêu của em, những lời ấy anh nói ra khi đôi cánh của thần chết lơ lửng quanh giường của cha em. Em lấy lại sức lực và cảm thấy trong bóng tối của nhà ngục em có một loại tự do nào đó đang làm dịu các khó khăn của chúng ta và làm giảm các khổ năo của chúng ta.

Nói xong những lời ấy, Selma rời khỏi nơi thờ phượng. C̣n tôi ở lại đó, thất lạc ḿnh trong đại dương sâu thẳm các ư nghĩ và mê mải ḿnh trong thế giới mặc khải, ở đó Thượng đế ngự trên ngai, các thiên thần ghi chép hành động của con người, các linh hồn kể lại tấn thảm kịch cuộc đời, và các tiên nga Houri của Thiên đàng hát những khúc ca t́nh yêu, khổ năo và bất tử.
Đêm xuống từ lâu khi tôi tỉnh giấc mê thiếp để thấy ḿnh hoang mang giữa các hoa viên, lặp lại âm vọng từng lời Selma đă nói và nhớ lại sự im lặng của nàng, các hành vi cử chỉ của nàng, vẻ mặt của nàng và cái chạm vào của đôi cánh tay nàng, cho tới khi tôi nhận ra ư nghĩa của cuộc chia tay và nỗi đau đớn trong trạng thái cô đơn. Tôi ưu phiền và tim vỡ nát.
Tôi khám phá ra thực tế đầu tiên rằng dẫu được sinh ra trong tự do loài người sẽ vẫn c̣n làm nô lệ cho những luật lệ khắc nghiệt do cha ông họ ban hành, và rằng bầu trời mà chúng ta tưởng như không thay đổi chính là sự đầu hàng của hôm nay trước ư muốn của ngày mai và sự đầu hàng của hôm qua trước ư muốn của hôm nay.
Từ đêm đó, có nhiều lần tôi nghĩ tới luật lệ của tinh thần, và có nhiều lần tôi làm cuộc so sánh giữa cao thượng của hi sinh với hạnh phúc của nổi loạn, để khám phá cho ra cái nào cao thương hơn và đẹp đẽ hơn cái nào. Nhưng cho tới lúc này, từ toàn bộ sự việc đó, tôi chỉ rút ra được một chân lư, và chân lư đó là sự chân thành, cái làm cho mọi hành vi cử chỉ của chúng ta trở nên đẹp đẽ và có danh dự. Và sự chân thành ấy có trong Selma Karamy.

Kẻ giải cứu
Năm năm hôn nhân của Selma đi qua, không mang về một đứa con nào để thắt chặt các mối dây tinh thần giữa nàng với chồng và buộc hai linh hồn tương khắc vào nhau.
Ở khắp nơi, người đàn bà cằn cỗi bị người đời nh́n với thái độ khinh thị v́ hầu hết đàn ông đều khao khát được làm cho ḿnh tồn tại măi măi qua con cháu.
Người đàn ông có tài sản thường xem bà vợ vô sinh của hắn như kẻ thù. Hắn ghét cay ghét đắng và bỏ rơi nàng, thậm chí ao ước sao cho nàng chóng chết. Thiếu gia Bey Galib thuộc loại đàn ông đó. Về mặt vật chất, y giống như đất, cứng như thép và tham lam như huyệt mộ. Khát vọng có một đứa con mang tên họ và danh tiếng của y khiến y oán hận Selma, bất chấp nhan sắc và tính nết dịu dàng của nàng.
Cây mọc trong hang không sinh quả. Và Selma, kẻ sống trong bóng tối cuộc đời không thể cưu mang con cái…
Chim sơn ca không làm tổ trong lồng kẻo số phận của chim non sẽ là nô lệ… Selma là người tù của khốn khổ, và do bởi ư muốn của Trời, nàng sẽ không có thêm một người tù nữa để chung chia cuộc sống của ḿnh. Hoa trong đồng nội là con cái t́nh thương cảm của mặt trời và t́nh thương yêu của thiên nhiên, và con cái của loài người là hoa của t́nh yêu và ḷng trắc ẩn…
Trong toà nhà xinh đẹp của Selma tại Ras Beyrouth, tinh thần của t́nh yêu và ḷng trắc ẩn không bao giờ thắng thế cho dẫu nàng hằng đêm qú gối trước Trời, cầu xin Thượng đế ban cho một đứa con để nàng có thể t́m thấy trong đứa bé nguồn khuây khỏa và an ủi… Nàng triền miên cầu nguyện cho tới khi Trời đáp ứng lời nguyện cầu của nàng…
Cuối cùng, cây trong hang trổ lộc để ươm quả. Chim sơn ca trong lồng bắt đầu xây tổ bằng chính lông và cánh của nó.
Selma ngữa đôi tay quấn xiềng xích lên Trời để tiếp nhận tặng phẩm quí báu của Thượng đế, và trên thế gian này, chẳng có ǵ khác có thể làm nàng hạnh phúc hơn việc trở nên người sắp làm mẹ…
Nàng bồn chồn chờ đợi, đếm từng ngày, trông ngóng thời điểm khúc nhạc dịu ngọt nhất của Trời, tiếng nói của đứa con, rung lên trong đôi tai người mẹ…
Qua những giọt nước mắt của ḿnh, Selma bắt đầu thấy hừng đông của một tương lai sáng sủa hơn.
Tới tháng Nisan, Selma chuyển ḿnh trên chiếc giường lâm bồn đau đớn, nơi sự sống và cái chết vật lộn nhau. Bác sĩ và nữ hộ sinh đă sẵn sàng để chuyển giao cho thế giới một vị khách mới.
Đến quá nửa đêm, Selma bắt đầu gào thét không dứt. Tiếng kêu la của sự sống tách ra từ sự sống. Tiếng kêu la của sự tiếp nối trong bầu trời hư không… Tiếng kêu la của sức lực yếu ớt trước sự sống vững chải của các sức lực lớn lao… Tiếng kêu la của một Selma khốn khổ đang nằm xuống trong tuyệt vọng dưới chân của sự sống và cái chết.
Tới rạng sáng Selma cho ra đời một bé trai. Khi mở được đôi mắt, nàng thấy khắp gian pḥng những khuôn mặt đang mỉm cười. Rồi nàng nh́n thêm lần nữa và thấy sự sống cùng cái chết vẫn đang vật lộn bên giường ḿnh. Selma nhắm mắt lại và khóc, thốt lên lần đầu tiên, “Ôi, con trai của tôi.” Người nữ hộ sinh bọc hài nhi trong tả lụa, đặt nó bên cạnh mẹ, nhưng bác sĩ vẫn tiếp tục nh́n Selma và đau đớn lắc đầu.
Những giọng nói hoan hỉ đánh thức hàng xóm. Láng giềng vội vàng kéo nhau chạy tới biệt thự để chúc mừng người cha có kẻ nối dơi vừa chào đời, nhưng bác sĩ vẫn đăm đăm nh́n Selma cùng trẻ sơ sinh và lắc đầu.
Người giúp việc đua nhau chạy đi loan tin mừng cho Thiếu gia Bey nhưng bác sĩ ngó chằm chặp Selma với hài nhi con nàng với vẻ thất vọng trên mặt ông.
Khi mặt trời bắt đầu mọc, Selma đưa đứa con mới sinh lên sát bầu ngực ḿnh. Nó mở mắt lần đầu nh́n mẹ. Rồi rùng ḿnh nó khép mắt lại lần cuối. Bác sĩ lấy đứa bé ra khỏi ṿng tay ôm của Selma; trên má ông chảy dài những giọt nước mắt. Rồi ông th́ thầm với ḿnh:
“Vị khách đi rồi.”
Đứa bé từ trần trong lúc các láng giềng đang ăn mừng với người cha trong đại sảnh đường của biệt thự, nâng ly chúc sức khoẻ cho kẻ thừa kế ấy. Selma nh́n bác sĩ, van nài:
“Xin đưa con tôi cho tôi để tôi ôm ấp nó.”
Đứa bé dù đă chết nhưng tiếng ly cụng vào nhau càng lúc càng rôm rả thêm trong sảnh đường…
Nó chào đời lúc rạng sáng và từ trần lúc mặt trời mọc…
Nó ra đời như một ư nghĩ, chết như một tiếng thở dài và biến mất như chiếc bóng…
Nó không sống để ủi an và làm khuây khỏa mẹ nó.
Cuộc đời của nó bắt đầu vào lúc kết thúc một đêm và kết thúc vào lúc bắt đầu một ngày, như giọt sương chảy ra từ những con mắt của bóng tối và khô khi ánh sáng chạm tới.
Một hạt trai sóng biển mang vào bờ và rồi thủy triều đưa trở lại đáy sâu đại dương.
Một đóa huệ chỉ mới kết nụ từ chồi của sự sống và bị dẫm nát dưới bàn chân của sự chết.
Một vị khách thân thiết với sự xuất hiện làm rạng rỡ tâm hồn Selma và sự ra đi giết chết linh hồn nàng.
Đây là cuộc sống của loài người, cuộc sống của các quốc gia, cuộc sống của các mặt trời, mặt trăng và các ngôi sao.
Tập trung tia mắt của ḿnh vào bác sĩ, Selma gào lớn:
“Đưa con của tôi cho tôi để tôi ôm ấp nó. Đưa đứa bé cho tôi để tôi cho nó bú.”
Lúc đó, bác sĩ chúi đầu xuống và nói với giọng nghẹn trong cổ họng:

“Con của mẹ, con tới đây để mang mẹ ra đi. Con đến để chỉ cho mẹ thấy con đường dẫn tới bờ biển. Con của mẹ ơi, đây mẹ đây… Con cứ dẫn mẹ đi, và chúng ta hăy rời cái hang tối tăm này.”
Và trong một phút, tia nắng mặt trời xuyên qua các bức màn cửa sổ, chiếu lên hai thi thể tĩnh lặng đang nằm yên trong giường, được canh giữ bởi phẩm cách sâu xa của tịch lặng và được phủ bóng bởi đôi cánh của thần chết.
Với đôi mắt đầm lệ, bác sĩ rời căn pḥng. Khi ông tới khách sảnh, tiệc mừng biến thành đám tang, nhưng Thiếu gia Bey Galib không hề thốt ra một lời hay nhỏ một giọt nước mắt. Y tiếp tục đứng bất động như pho tượng, bàn tay phải vẫn cầm ly rượu.
Hôm sau, Selma được khâm liệm trong chiếc áo cưới màu trắng của nàng và đặt vào áo quan. Khăn liệm của đứa bé là tả quấn của nó. Áo quan của nó là ṿng tay người mẹ. Huyệt mộ của nó là bầu ngực êm đềm của mẹ ḿnh. Hai thi thể được mang đi trong một linh cửu. Và tôi cung kính bước đi với đám đông, tống tiễn Salem và hài nhi con nàng tới nơi an nghỉ của hai mẹ con.

Giám mục cùng các linh mục tiếp tục hát lễ và đọc kinh cho tới khi phu đào huyệt lấp xong đất. C̣n tôi, tôi đứng cô đơn một bên; không một linh hồn nào an ủi tôi, như thể Selma và đứa con của nàng chẳng có chút ư nghĩa nào đối với tôi.
Người đưa tiễn rời nghĩa trang. Phu đào huyệt đứng bên nấm mộ mới với chiếc thuổng trong tay.
Tôi bước tới gần ông ta và ḍ hỏi:
“Bác có nhớ Farris Effandi chôn ở đâu không?”
Ông nh́n tôi một chốc rồi chỉ nấm mộ của Selma và nói:
